Travel Photography: Life through a Lens

We all love to travel, be it an overseas adventure, a trip across Australia or a weekend escape to the country. It is not important how long you are away or where the destination is – it is about capturing the essence of the experience, being able to pictorially define the important qualities of your journey. This course develops your ability to tell a story through pictures – whether you want to be a photojournalist, create a fabulous photography book or communicate your travels and stories to friends and family and retain their interest... Sydney is an exciting city full of cultural diversity, captivating landscapes and is also a city of festivals. A perfect location to explore your story telling and develop your pictorial skills for your future travel adventures.

Workshop Format:

TUTORS: 1 professional Photographer (Sharon Hickey / Shane Rozario) and a Photographers Assistant. Subject to group size.

CLASS SIZE: Minimum 2 / Maximum 10

DAY OF OPERATION: Selected Saturdays

TIME: 9AM to 5PM (8 hours) Please arrive 15 minutes before the workshop commences to ensure we start on time.

LOCATION: Meeting Point, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), 140 George St, The Rocks. Meet outside the George St entrance at 8.45am.

 

Who Should Attend:

Beginners / Amateurs / Intermediate.
People who have a basic knowledge of their camera. People who are about to travel, or are interested in travel and creative photography and photographers who have not practised their photography in a while. 

Prerequisite:

Basic knowledge of your camera only.

Destination: 

The Rocks, Observatory Hill, walk the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Milson's Point, Wendy's Secret Garden, Luna Park & Circular Quay

Our journey will explore the highlights and delights of the Rocks, including the markets, small lanes and views from Observatory Hill. There will be many opportunities to explore and produce creative and exciting pictorial journals of your experiences. The Rocks and surrounding areas are full of fascinating historic landmarks, which feature an array of people with diverse lifestyles, cultures and personal stories. We then journey by foot across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge to Milson's Point where we break for lunch. 

This afternoon we focus on landscape photography - shooting under the bridge, across the rippling waters to the city. We then visit the intriguing and little visited Wendy’s Secret Garden and discover and photography its magical allure. This is followed by Luna park where we are inundated with movement and colour and where we will practice special effects to capture the intensity and excitement of this movement. Finally, we catch a ferry back to Circular Quay to finish our photographic adventure.

The Workshop:

Aperture Traveller workshop is an exciting way to explore and develop new and unique techniques and ideas to capture the ultimate travel experience. We learn to create stories through defining images that either add or interpret your experience to others. 

Both travel and documentary photography tell a story. This course will explore technical and compositional elements important to portraiture, landscape and creative photography. 

This course is suitable for people with a basic knowledge of their camera and its modes of operation. We will concentrate on compositional elements, interpreting light, and working with people to create your story.

This course is an excellent introduction to working as a photojournalist, complimenting any written stories you are working on or creating interesting travel stories of your own personal adventures.

We also cover how to observe our surroundings and develop a sixth sense when that perfect shot might present itself. We also learn how to select images that depict emotion and meaning when developing a subject direction through the editing process.

Which Camera:

DSLR, or any camera that has the ability to use manual settings.  This can include small compact cameras and also iPhones with the appropriate controls/apps or if you own a Mirrorless, rangefinders, Prosumer range of point and shoot units.  All these cameras must have functions that can be adjusted.

Objectives: 
At the end of this workshop you will be able to interpret and clearly articulate (via image) a situation, event or experience and produce an efficient edited 'compact' version of your experience. 

Outcomes: 
This is a natural step to developing your own personal creativity, project work and exhibitions might be possible outcomes. 

Camera Kits:

Kits are available for hire if you want to experience the full functionality and excitement of using a professional photographers camera. Kits include a camera body, a series of lenses and a flash. The cost is $75 for the day. Kits are limited, so if interested, please book this when you book and confirm your workshop. We also have some tripods and mono pods available if you don’t have one, please enquire when booking.

Weather:

If it looks like there will be unbearable weather on the day, we will contact you early that morning to advise that the workshop will not operate. Otherwise, you should assume the workshop will operate as scheduled. In the event of cancellation, you can select an alternative workshop date.
